Economic development has a different meaning for different people. Likewise, the success of economic development programs are gauged differently. Regardless of how you define or judge economic development, the program in the Baytown area has been, and will continue to be, extremely successful. If new jobs are one of your criteria for gauging success, the Economic Development Foundation has been directly involved in working with many different companies which have located in Baytown and several existing companies which have expanded their facilities. These expansions and new businesses have created numerous jobs and saved many more. If you think expanding the tax base is important, the companies the Foundation has been working with have invested millions of dollars in taxable buildings and equipment. If you think the economic development program is only successful if it puts dollars in your pocket, then think abut the millions of dollars in new direct and indirect payrolls per year and the number of times (multiplied) those dollars turn over in the area (estimate a multiplier of four for total economic impact per year). Because every segment of the community impacts the ability of the Foundation to accomplish its mission, an essential ingredient to this success has been the attitude and teamwork on the part of all units of government (i.e. county, school, city, college) and the Baytown Chamber of Commerce. In every instance, the companies with which we have been working, have been impressed with the desire to assist and the can do attitude of these groups. It is imperative that this positive and unified approach to problem-solving be maintained by each of us, so we can individually and collectively meet our goals.
