Transportation

Ready access to all modes of transportation is a major factor attracting industry to Baytown. The city is served by the Houston Ship Channel and the Port of Houston, one of the world's busiest ports, Baytown's location on Interstate 10 facilitates over-the-road transportation.  Two rail lines, two private airports and two nearby international airports, William P. Hobby and Houston Bush Intercontinental, also serve Baytown.

Airports- The two major airports located within 30 miles of the area.  Most of the air cargo service and 67 percent of the air passenger service is out of Bush International Airport to the north.  Hobby Airport to the south provides passenger service and some cargo capabilities.

Daily nonstop or direct flights are available to 105 cities in the United States, including 47 of the 50 largest U.S. markets and 29 foreign markets.  Houston is served by 23 passenger airlines and eight all-cargo carriers.  Freighter and "combi" service is available to Europe, Asia and Latin America.  Every major overnight delivery service in the United States serves Houston on a daily basis.

The Houston Ship Channel - located minutes away from Baytown, is the largest port in the nation in foreign commerce, third largest in the nation in total tonnage, and the sixth largest overall in the world.  The channel stretches 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico just east of Galveston Island to the Turning Basin six miles from downtown Houston. The waterway is generally 40 feet deep and 400 feet wide.  Vessels of 80,000-100,000 deadweight tons routinely navigate the channel.

Barbours Cut Container Terminal - with its four modern container berths, eight state-of-the-art cranes, and computerized inventory system is the most efficient container facility in the Gulf.

Ground Transportation - There are 587 interstate motor freight carriers servicing the area. Baytown is within 30 miles of several major highways:  Interstate 10, Interstate 45 and US Highway 59.  Interstate 10, which passes through Baytown, runs from Los Angeles, California on the West Coast to Jacksonville, Florida on the East Coast.  In addition there is an extensive network of state and local highways.  Texas has one of the largest highway construction budgets in the nation.
